Modern tea research lab set up

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: A modern tea research laboratory in National Tea Research Institutions Manshera (NTRIM) has started functioning to process and cultivate tea on commercial basis to enhance domestic production as well as to reduce the import bill of the commodity.
“The laboratory comprises three departments including soil sciences, entomology, bio-chemistry and horticulture for research and development of tea production in the country,” said an official of the company while talking to the media.

The project initiated by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will be completed in next two years at a total cost of Rs. 490 million to further enhance the tea cultivation on commercial basis. “The country is importing tea costing Rs 20 to 22 billion per annum which was a huge burden on national exchequer,” said PCSIR Chairman Dr. Muhammad Afzal while inaugurating the project.
