Pakistan needs more work on biotech

STAFF REPORT FAISALABAD: Pakistan is lagging far behind the world in the field of biotechnology despite cultivating BT cotton on 2.4 million hectares with the introduction of 29 biotechnological enriched varieties.
“The world population is increasing rapidly and there is a dire need to cope with the food challenge, it is the need of the hour to promote biotechnology and bio-safety,” agricultural scientist Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik said at a seminar “Implementation of Bio-safety Protocols” held here last week.

He said that pest-free crops are being produced across the globe but Pakistan is far behind in the field. He called for tangible steps to inform people about intellectual property rights by introducing short courses on the topic and launching a media campaign.
On the occasion, Prof Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, VC Agricultural University Faisalabad, stressed the need to adopt modern technique and take measures to decrease the cost of production of crops by increasing the per acre yield.
He said that the world was divided by ecology and economics. He said both sectors played a vital role in the development of the country. He said that it was the duty of scientists to introduce improved varieties of crops to feed the population of the world.
