Plan to set up 7 new varsities shelved


STAFF REPORT KARACHI: The plan to establish seven new universities in Pak1istan with the collaboration of some foreign countries have been shelved as the initial funds for four universities amounting to Rs160 billion have not been released by the government.
According to the details, in February 2008 the then interim PM Mohammadmian Soomro had approved the establishment of seven universities. Four universities including an Italian at Karachi, Austrian and German at Lahore and a Chinese University in Islamabad were to start functioning. The sum of Rs 160 billion was approved in the budget. However, the project has now been shelved mainly due to the non-release of funds.
