SECP’s eServices win international award

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: As a mark of high recognition of the progress towards introduction of eServices, the IDG’s Computerworld Honors Programme has announced the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) as winner of the Laureate Gold Medal for its eServices Project.

This annual award programme honours visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change. This year the programme has received more than 1,000 nominations from 23 different countries.
“The number and quality of nominations this year were very inspiring and demonstrate how valuable IT is to community change,” said John Amato, Publisher, Computerworld. The Computerworld is very proud to name the 2011 class of Laureates and showcase their initiatives benefiting society through innovative uses of IT, he said.
The 2011 laureates will be recognized publicly at the Laureate Medal Ceremony to be held in Washington on June 20. At the Gala Evening, additional honours are given to 55 21st Century Achievement Award finalists – five Laureates from each of the eleven categories – each with a selected case study. That field is narrowed further with the presentation of the 21st Century Achievement Awards. These awards are given to only one Finalist in each category, singled out for special recognition by the Program Judges to be the very best among their peers.
Amato said that the case studies are formally inducted into the programme’s International Archives, and honourees are presented with a medallion inscribed with the Programme’s mission, “A Search for New Heroes.”
“This award is a significant indicator of SECP’s commitment to providing a healthy environment to the investors for the growth of Pakistani economy by implementing efficient automated systems to assure the transparency and accountability,” CIO SECP, Arshad Javed Minhas, said while commenting on this achievement.
He said that the eServices system is a continuation of the SECP’s efforts to make use of advanced technologies to ensure that the Commission effectively performs its regulatory, monitors and enforces duties.
“The IS&T Division has fulfilled a number of strategic initiatives, which would be treated as the infrastructure for many projects for the Commission including eServices, eSurveillance, ISO 27001 certification and establishment of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery System,” he explained.
“One of the things we wanted to help with was reducing the burden of walk-ins
and phone calls from people asking for regulation and reference documents. There had to be a faster way to serve people with this information without having people dedicated to the mundane tasks,” he explained.
It is to be mentioned here that eServices system of the Commission is accessible from anywhere in the world via definite login ID with digital signature. It enormously facilitates the corporate sector, practitioners, consultants and public at large.
The SECP though initially only looking after the regulation in the corporate sector and capital markets, yet gradually its mandate has expanded to include the supervision and regulation of insurance companies, non-banking finance companies and private pensions.
