More efforts needed to protect biodiversity

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: As the survival of human life is linked with protection of biodiversity, there is dire need to take more vigorous joint initiatives ensure preserve out life with the help of biodiversity.

“Multiple factors including fast deteriorating climate, glaciers melting, weather changes, droughts, floods, etc. are haunting the very survival of biodiversity which is a major cause of concern for all the stakeholders,” remarked Guy-Antoine Dufourd, Deputy Director Alliance Francaise, while addressing audience on the of the third consecutive expo here last week. The event was arranged by PSF in collaboration with the embassy of France.

Mentioning that the 2010 was the Biodiversity Year, Antoine Dufourd said explained that biodiversity is not only plants, animals, environment as it’s the whole life. “We can preserve our life with the help of biodiversity,” he maintained.

This is 3rd consecutive year for travelling expos, first the Mathematic Expo, second was Environment Expo and third one is the Biodiversity. This time the expo route was Islamabad, Abbottabad, Faisalabad and Quetta.

It is worth mentioning here that the United Nations has declared 2011-2020 as the Biodiversity Decade.

On the occasion, he appreciated the contributions of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and its strength towards popularization of science in the country.

“We have to go a long way in exploring the field of biodiversity as only 1.9 million species out of more than 100 million species have so far been discovered. Biodiversity is the top most priority of French government,” Eng. Sandie Favier, Attache for Science & Technology, Embassy of France, Pakistan, said while addressing the audience.

In her remarks, Prof Shameem Mumtaz, Principal Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-7/4, said that this expo is a great help not only for students but also for teachers to understand what biodiversity is and how it affects our life. It’s a well learning process, she said.

Dr Manzoor Hussain Soomro, Chairman PSF, said that it’s another occasion for our pride to hold this expo in collaboration with Embassy of France. He said that Pakistan needs to invest more in science museums and take more initiatives to create awareness and to educate our children
“We are striving for EU funding to improve science activities in Pakistan,” he disclosed.
