Broadband rates lower in South Asia : PTA study .....(Issue # 50)

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The broadband tariffs are very low in Pakistan than in other regional states, which is the main factor behind the abnormal increase in the cell phone users, reveals a recent study made by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on the telecom sector.

“Purpose of the study was to assess and compare the level of broadband tariffs prevailing in Pakistan with that in other countries and to identify the areas where further improvement can be made for the benefit of operators and users,” says an official of the telecom authority while commenting on the study.

According to him, the broadband tariffs of India , Bangladesh , Sri Lanka , Maldives , Nepal , Bhutan and Malaysia have been examined. The study was based on the broadband rates offered by different operators in each country on unlimited or limited data basis.

Each country’s broadband profile and operator-wise price details are evaluated and compared with similar or adjoining package available in Pakistan . However, one area connection is that despite competitive tariffs Pakistan penetration rate is lowest among peer countries.
