PARC arranges wheat crop sowing in flood-hit areas ....(Issue # 50)


STAFF REPORT KARACHI: By socially mobilizing small farmers, especially women workers, the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Gender and Social Development Directorate (G&SDD/PARC) has successfully arranged the sowing of wheat crop on about 50,000 acres of land in flood-affected areas across the country.

“The initiative has been taken with an objective of addressing the challenges of food insecurity in flood-affected areas in collaboration with local partners and organizations,” an official of the Agriculture Ministry.

He said that for this purpose Jamshoro, Dadu, Jacobabad and Shikarpur districts were selected in addition other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhaw including Chitral.

The G&SDD and PARC mobilised all the network members and partners in Sindh such as Women Welfare Association (WWA), Eco-Conservation Initiatives (ECI), and Fundamental Ideas Navigators (FIN) and carried out need assessment of the flood-affected small farmers having agricultural land below 25 acres.

In this connection, liaison was established with the respective district governments of the target areas who provided support to G&SDD in field logistics for distribution wheat seed. In addition to this local farmers also extended their all out support facilitating the field teams in fair distribution of wheat seed and timely sowing of the wheat crop.

Along with addressing the food insecurity, PARC is also planning to contribute in the rehabilitation process of the flood-affected areas. For that, in collaboration with partners, it has planned to establish three model villages in such areas.

To begin with, identification and selection of the sites has been carried out. The partners and the local inhabitants will provide all the inputs and material to the affected villages. The local inhabitants would also be responsible to provide required labour for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the sites as model villages.
