Mango export to up this year

Volume 2, Issue 2
STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The export of mango would earn over $300 million from the current $150 million during the upcoming season as the value addition and introduction of modern processing technologies are being introduced in the country.

“Mangoes produced in the country are of very good quality and there is great potential for export of the fruit,” said an official of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food while talking to media here last week.

The agriculture continues to be the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and enjoys a major share in its economic development. It has always remained a subject of priority in Pakistan’s policies and developmental plans. Pakistan is the fifth largest producer and third largest exporter of mangoes in the world. The mango sector has great potential to grow further due to inherent characteristics of Pakistani mango, which was known world wide for its colour, taste, sweetness and flavour.

Due to close cooperation between the Agriculture Ministry and USDA Islamabad, a milestone was achieved in August 2010 when USDA, Washington issued a notice of its decision to permit import of fresh mangoes from Pakistan into the continental USA.

Pakistan has benefited enormously due to active cooperation of USDA with which it has signed a Framework Equivalency Work Plan (FEWP) to address Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) issues, by allowing irradiation as a mitigation measure against fruit fly.
