STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has sacked Dr. Zafar Altaf as Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Council and appointed Chief Scientist Dr Muhammad Afzal in his place, confirmed the ministry spokesman.
According to sources, Dr. Zafar Altaf has been accused of serious allegations, which led to the termination of his contract.
His tenure of service had ended on August 12, 2008 after which he was re-appointed on the same position on contract for two years. That period ended on August 11, 2010, but authorities kept him in the same position till now.
The Standing Committee of National Assembly had raised their voice against Dr. Zafar Altaf’s holding the seat of PARC chairman after the end of his contract. Accusations at him include enrollment of 1,000 illegal employees from whom 300 included his friends and relatives.
They were getting Rs. 1.5 to 2 lakh of salary at the name of research. The standing committee’s of and on remainders against him resulted in Dr. Zafar Altaf’s termination.
However, Dr. Zafar Altaf has disowned these charges and said that such recruitments were made only on merit and there was nothing like nepotism or favouritism.
He said that basically he has been removed from his post as his contribution towards improvement in agriculture growth has disturbed the stakeholders who do not want development grow.
According to him, he has successfully developed the hybrid cottonseed to counter the pesticides attack on this crop. He said that his research would contribute significantly towards increasing the per acre yield in the years to come and enhance the cotton export volume.
