The inspiring leader

Usman Sheikh has extensive experience in Sr Management within the Telecom, Power Generation, Supply Chain Management, Financial and Banking Institutions. He is currently serving as MD and COO of Konnect Holden Limited – Akbar Associates

How do you see the progress of the ICT in Pakistan?

Usman Sheikh: Unfortunately like all other sectors the Telecom and IT sector have also been hit hard due to recession and slowing down of economy not just in Pakistan but globally. Pakistan could achieve a lot more with a focused strategy on IT and Telecom sector by reviewing the policies for 2010 and 2011. In reality we need to develop strategies and policies for long term in order to stabilize and bring direct foreign investments within this sector. We also need to review the much delayed 3G license as Pakistan’s growth in Telecom sector will be strongly effected in comparison to the rest of the world and especially our neighboring countries.

Telecom services are a “white hot market today”, what is your opinion?

Every service industry has its positive and negative outlook and Telecom sector is no different from the other. The services that are rendered in the Telecom sector are growing, however, their competitive edge is challenged on a daily basis by numerous companies which have accelerated without performing within the market or having pre-requisites like ISO certifications, registering with the Pakistani engineering council and experienced track record. Their survival and making compromises within the service sector is only based on their financial drive which they offer to operators at a cheaper cost.

How you developed your career?

I started my career with Wal-Mart Corporation as Logistics Associate Manager and remained there for two years working on International Operations for Mexico and South America. Before moving back to Pakistan I worked as Regional Collection Manager with Diners Club, Project Manager for United Nations Industrial Development Organization and Financial Market Analyst and Head IT Coastal Technology Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd. In 2001 I joined Nortel Networks in Pakistan and worked there for three and a half year in different capacities, Project Manager being the first. I was Regional Manager when Ufone was launched and Ufone was my particular assignment. Later, I was the first Pakistani to replace the expat position of Country Project Director.

The Nortel experience brought me in to the telecom industry. From there I moved to my family business which was under the name of Akbar Associates Group. The Group’s business was diversified into different areas and KHL was formed within the Group exactly seven years back.

What is your message for new comers?

Work with integrity, pride and earn self-respect from your end customers. In order to earn self-respect one must follow these objectives in letter and spirit.
