Pakistan can benefit from own mineral resources: Dr. Samar


STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is rich in mineral resources and it can earn billions of dollars if it itself mine especially the Reko Diq gold and copper mines.

He was talking to the media persons outside the Supreme Court building after appearing in the court during hearing about Reko Diq mines lease case.

“Pakistan owns enough natural resources and has sound manpower to meet its energy needs and run the state institutions smoothly,” renowned nuclear scientist and member Planning Commission, Dr Samar Mubarakmand, told the media here last wee.

However, he said that what we lack is sincerity and commitment to discover and utilise these resources.

The nuclear scientist said that Pakistan could benefit from $224 billion if minerals from Reko Diq are mined by Pakistan at its own.

He added that the country has trained manpower and even had been able to make fuel for its nuclear power plants.

“We also were able to make uranium to meet our needs. Earlier in his submission before the SC bench Dr Samar Mubarakmand said that the facts and figures he was disclosing were derived from the feasibility report of Balochistan government.

The nuclear scientist said that foreign mining companies in their reports have revealed that copper and gold worth $104 billion was present in 8 kilometers area of Reko Diq mines where the companies were given licence of four hundred square kilometers. “If we explore the entire area gold, copper and other minerals worth thousands of billions of dollars could be extracted”.
