IT: Smart entrepreneurship

Syed Iqtidar Zaidi, CEO, TechAccess, holds that progress could be made through effective policies. Mr. Zaidi is willing to spare some time and guide the fresh entrepreneurs as to how they can start their businesses

Your achievements?

S. Iqtidar Zaidi: Our vision is to create jobs and bring the latest technology to Pakistan. These are our biggest achievements. Over 200 people are employed at TechAccess and among them over 100 are highly skilled professionals.

What is the difference between the human resource of both Pakistan and India?

Of course, India has hardworking manpower that is committed to their jobs. However, Pakistanis are a little more confident and are willing to accept challenges. Not just that, our skilled work force has the ability to meet the challenges as well. This is the basic difference.

Is IT a proper industry in Pakistan?

IT should be an industry in Pakistan because IT is involved almost in all sectors - whether it is medicine, defence, banking and agriculture, etc. About six to seven years back, we were very backward in the IT sector. But now the situation has changed.

What should be done to promote the IT sector?

There should be some incentives for the general public to encourage them to use IT more. The government should come up with some effective policies, but, of course, the private sector is the real driving force.

Can advisory council or board help to train the young entrepreneurs?

An advisory council or board has an important role to play. Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) is providing effective guidance to the young and new entrepreneurs. Young entrepreneurs could approach it quite easily.

Are the universities playing a role to produce good entrepreneurs?

Yes, of course. The universities are playing a vibrant role. I would place NUST on top of the list. Then you have LUMS, SZABIST, and many other institutions that are producing good entrepreneurs, which were not available about ten years ago.

How can we improve the education standards of government universities?

LUMS has very high fees, as they have hired talented pool of teachers at higher salaries. I think teaching is the most rewarding and toughest job but we don’t pay them well. As the teachers shape up the society, we need to fund them well in order to encourage them properly. Pakistan, I think, is the best place to invest in education as it has a vast pool of human resources. But unfortunately we are neglecting that.

How can we improve the IT sector?

We can make progress through effective policies. Best option is to hold seminars, conferences and debates to create a smart entrepreneurship in the country. In order to create jobs, you have to create good entrepreneurs. There should be some incubators. I am willing to spare some time and guide the fresh entrepreneurs as to how they can start their businesses.
