Government should enable IT companies in Pakistan by engaging them in more and more projects, so that companies can then export similar services global. Muhammad Haris Naseer, Director InfoTech Private Limited shares his views

What were the concepts to set up InfoTech in Pakistan?

Muhammad Haris Naseer: InfoTech was set up with a vision to establish an IT Systems Integration company that could provide service end-to-end projects. The idea behind InfoTech’s business model is to enable our customers to focus on their core businesses without indulging in dealing with multiple vendors for their needs of IT applications.

Is Pakistani market profitable for your company?

We primarily work in Financial, Telecommunications, and Government sectors because these are the sectors where our expertise lies. We have tremendous experience of projects in these sectors. But this does not mean we only work in these industries, we have many customers from other industries as well, but our core focus is these three.

The Pakistani market has been our bread and butter for over a decade and has been fairly profitable, but due to a decrease in overall spending, things have become challenging here.

What steps should the Government take to support IT market?

It would be unfair to say that government is not doing anything, but it is fair to say that it is not doing as much as it should be. Government should enable IT companies in Pakistan by engaging them in more and more projects, so that those companies can then export similar services globally. If you do not have local experience, your bid in an international tender will probably won’t even be accepted. The government isn’t doing much on this front. It should come up with projects to help bridge this experience gap, especially in the area of eServices – that has a big potential, both locally and internationally.

How can Pakistan attract foreign investors in IT sector?

Pakistan already has a very favourable policy when it comes to software and services export, so setting up such a company in Pakistan is very attractive, but unfortunately, on the other hand the poor security situation is the biggest reason for the lack of foreign investment. Unless that changes dramatically, I don’t see much happening on this front.
