MUET designs gasfier to help produce energy

STAFF REPORT KARACHI: The Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, has designed an indigenous gasifier to produce syngas from Thar coal.

The project is the result of collaboration between the MUET and PCSIR laboratory, Karachi, where fabrication took place, Suhail Soomro, Assistant Professor Chemical Engineering Department, told the media here last week.

He said that the initiative has been taken by a group of students from his department after a through research on gasification of Thar coal and other energy resources.

He said that it was the first effort made by MUET students in the country to develop an indigenous product for the purpose.

It is to be mentioned here that earlier Pakistan used to import such equipment from abroad, spending an enormous amount on it.

“Now the gasifier will be used for high quality research in the field of energy resource development using a variety of solid fuels, including coal,” he elaborated.

The gasifier commissioned at the MUET is running efficiently after going through a testing phase. Test runs gave a very promising result and will not only help researchers, but also provide valuable information to the stakeholders for proper and efficient utilisation of Thar coal, according to the expert.

The VC said those facilities would open the doors of research for researchers to find out the most appropriate way of utilising Thar coal.
