Pakistan to export 0.7m tons wheat

STAFF REPORT LAHORE: Pakistan, Asia’s third-largest producer of wheat, will export 700,000 metric tons of the grain after a ban of three years.

“We have signed deals for the export of 500,000 tons of wheat and will finalize the sale of another 200,000 in near future,” Najam Shah, Food Director for Punjab, told the media saying it would fetch Rs 18 billion.

According to Agriculture Minister Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Pakistan may produce 23 million tons of wheat this year, compared with the government’s estimate of 24 million tons and annual consumption of 22 million tons.

The government on December 7 had lifted the ban on exports, prompting estimates the country would ship as much as 2 million tons in the year ending June.
