ADB starts due diligence of Bhasha Dam project

STAFF REPORTER ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan is facing severe water shortage couple with the energy crisis, the Asian Development Bank has started the due diligence of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, which would enhance the country’s water storage capacity as well as hydel power generation.

“The Ban would offer a substantial volume of loan coupled with direct financing and co-financing facilities,” Rune Stroem, Country Director ADB disclosed this to the media last week.

“The Bank is touchy about the safeguards of the projects that include the land acquisition, resettlement of displaced masses in fair and transparent manners. “However, the bank is satisfied the way the things are moving on safeguards.”

“Pakistan also needs to be very careful in future keeping in view the fast depleting water storage capacity of the country and should make focus in developing the mega water hydropower projects that would also play pivotal role in mitigating the adverse impact of floods.

He said that Pakistan badly needs in hydropower projects particularly in Diamer-Bhasha dam to overcome the growing energy crisis and massively dwindling water storage capacity.
