HU wins alternative energy projects contest

STAFF REPORT KARACHI: Students from various public and private engineering universities have recently presented feasible solutions at the All Karachi Inter-Universities Project competition. The contest was won by the Hamdard University students for designing a model of an energy efficient home. With solar panels, wind turbines and modifications in the design, the group was able to calculate the impact of major modifications in green designing for an energy efficient home.
The second prize was bagged by the Cooling Tower set up by the NED students while HU’s Hydro Power Energetica received the consolation prize.

At the science fair, organised by the Hamdard University, many projects were designed keeping in mind the growing energy crisis in Pakistan. The sun tracking system was another applicable project set up by the students of the same university. The motor operated system helped the solar panels to face the sun for maximum exposure to sunlight. Young innovators from Usman Institute of Technology presented a practical solution to cut the megawatt usage for conventional traffic signals at 120 intersections in Karachi. The ‘High Efficiency Lighting System Power LED’ project was designed by students of HU. The project directly runs on 220 volts and produces light from LEDs with 90 per cent efficiency.
Students from the NED University developed a simple water cooler. The prototype is a modified design of the existing electric water cooler.
