Govt needs to reset IT and telecom growth track

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The federal government has allocated Rs 793 million for various development and research project under IT and Telecommunication Division for the year 2011-12.
The proposed budget is 10 per cent higher as compared with the allocation of Rs 718 million for the outgoing year 2010-11, which was drastically slashed by 56 per cent to Rs 310 million after revision.

According to experts, mishandling of various IT and telecom projects and mismanagement in IT departments shows that the government has least bothered about the growth of the local IT industry.
“The government does not have any priority to carry out ICT development project in the country despite the fact that the industry has lot of potential to grow in local and global markets,” an official of Pakistan Software Export Board said while requesting anonymity.
He said that the PSEB had designed different development projects of IT in the closing fiscal year but the government did not pay any attention to approve their proposals. “All plans have been put in the frozen box for long time,” he said.
“The government should ensure the spending on ICT sector with its firm commitment for providing infrastructure to private sector companies,” Ashraf Kapadia, Chairman Pakistan Software Houses’ Association (PA@SHA), said in his remarks on this critical issue.
