PTA deposits Rs 13.56b to national exchequer


STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), that is responsible for regulation of different telecommunication companies and network operators. is also liable to pay taxes even it is a government’s organization and has paid Rs 13.56 billion taxes.According to details, in fiscal year 2009-10 total of Rs 109.05 billion tax amount was collected from telecom sector and almost 50 per cent of the amount came from general sales tax.
It has been reported by PTA that in first quarter of 2011, the amount of tax collect by national exchequer from telecom sector was Rs 56.3 billion, but the tax collected in first quarter of 2010 was Rs 49 billion.The tele-density in Pakistan sometimes increases and sometimes decreases. The total tele-density stood at about 65.2 per cent.
Tele-density is basically the amount of users who uses landline fixed and wireless telephones, mobile phones etc.There are various issues that are creating problems for telecom sector like energy crisis, increased competition, decreasing exchange rates and much more.
PTA has taken many initiatives in this regard but the government also has to take certain steps for making the better future of telecom industry.
