Federal budget completely ignored farming sector


STAFF REPORT LAHORE: Representatives of farmer organisations have expressed their utter disappointment over the federal budget 2011-12, saying the finance bill has not announced a single step for the betterment of agriculture sector.Farmers’ organisations, including Farmers Associates Pakistan, Kissan Board Pakistan, Agri Forum Pakistan and Punjab Water Council, have termed the federal budget a total failure on the part of the present government.
“I have never heard such a pathetic budget speech with regard to agriculture sector in the last two decades,” Ibrahim Mughal, Chairman Agri-Forum Pakistan, remarked about the federal budget.He said that the present budget is completely silent over the agriculture sector, which is astonishing for many, as Pakistan is primarily an agrarian country.
Sarfraz Ahmad Khan, Vice President, Kissan Board Pakistan, said that the rulers are not keen to get rid of the shackles of international financial institutions, including the IMF and the World Bank. That is why, they are not taking steps for reducing costs of production of farming sector, he maintained.
