Experts for early use of Thar coal



STAFF REPORT HYDERABAD: Amidst the persistent energy crisis in Pakistan, eminent geoscientists have emphasized the need for adopting speedy measures for early utilization of indigenous resource of Thar coal, saying with the establishment of coal power plants would help in overcoming of energy crisis.

The geoscientists expressed their concerns over the delay in utilizing the Thar coal reservoirs at a national seminar on Coal of Sindh-Endeavours for power Pakistan” here last week.

“The country’s energy crisis has reached an alarming stage causing great disruption in industrial growth and economic development in the country,” VC University of Sindh Jamshoro Prof. Dr. Nazir A. Mughal said in his address on the occasion.

He said that it is surprising that 90 per cent coal lying in Sindh which can cater to the needs of the energy of the country for the years, if such huge reservoirs are utilized properly.

He regretted that despite the discovery of huge coal deposits of Thar, our progress in utilizing this recourse has been unfortunately almost nil.

Eminent geoscientist and Secretary General of Association of Asian Academies of Science Dr. Qasim Jan said that Thar coal is only indigenous source to overcome the energy crisis in the country.

“With exploiting the Thar coal, the energy on cheaper rates will be available and it will help slowdown the migration from rural to urban areas,” he said.
