Institute of Space Technology




IST (Institute of Space Technology) is located in Islamabad, Pakistan aiming at producing scientists and engineers in the field of space technology. Institute of Space Technology offers degree programs in Aerospace Engineering, Communication systems engineering and Material Science and Engineering and two split MS programmes, one with BUAA for Aerospace Engineering and other with University of Surrey (Unis) for communication system engineering. It is the first non-military institute that offers higher education in the fields of Aerospace and Communication Systems Engineering in the country.

It is a federally chartered degree awarding Institute established in 2002 under the aegis of PNSA. The programs offered are approved by The Higher Education Commission as well as The Pakistan Engineering Council. IST also offers Linked Graduate Programs in collaboration with foreign universities in a host of disciplines.

Institute of Space Technology offers undergraduate degree programs in Aerospace Engineering, Communication System Engineering, and Material Science and Engineering. Graduate degree is being offered in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering (Local Programs and Linked Program with BUAA), Department of Communication Systems engineering (Local Programs and Linked Program with University of Surrey), and National Centre for Remote Sensing & GIS ( Local MS Programs and 15 Weeks Short Course (RS&GISc)).

IST provides scholarships and sponsorships on need and merit base which are decided by the board of directors. Scholarships and sponsorships are decided keeping in view the performance of students in the entry test and semester exams. If a student is sponsored by an organization, his/her fees are refunded according to the criteria set by the sponsoring organization. Merit scholarships are offered after each semester to students who maintain cumulative GPA of above 3.0 and semester GPA of above 3.25.

Extracurricular activities specially the Societies play an important role in delivering the quality education. To create / increase the interest of students in hobby projects/research related to Aerospace and Material Engineering there are several societies in IST which includes; Aero Society, Communication Society, Materials Science Society, Pegasus (A bi-monthly, bilingual (English/Urdu) magazine that encourages students to hone their literary skills), News Corridor (A campus newsletter covering the latest happenings in the Institution), Fidens: The Adventure Club (A club for outdoor enthusiasts), AOUJ: Performing Arts Club (A club for the promotion of drama and dance), Sports Society (Oversees the inter-university and intra-university sports fixtures), Umeed (A philanthropic organization that helps underprivileged students in the Twin-City area), Blood Donor Club (Organizes an annual blood donation camp), Environmental Club (A club for raising awareness and taking concrete measures for environmental protection), Arts and Entertainment Society (Promotes Short-film making etc. Also organizes a bi-monthly movie night), and Goonj: The Musik Society (Promotes Music and Music teaching).

IST has organized the Twin City Inter-University Challenge every year for three years now. The event attracts a lot of participation from the universities/ Degree Awarding Institutes/ Post-Graduate colleges in the Rawalpindi/Islamabad area as well as from surrounding cities of Taxila and Peshawar. The event includes over a dozen extracurricular competitions such as Dramatics, Short Film, All-rounder, Mushaira, and Battle of the Bands etc.

The institute has pioneered the observation of the International World Space Week in Pakistan. Walks, Lectures and Seminars are arranged in various schools and colleges of the Twin-City area by students of IST. The week culminates with a full day variety show at the Institute that includes Space Quiz, Poster competitions, Space Cinema and a Musical concert.

The Institute aims at providing outstanding quality education to diverse groups of national and international students. Academic programs focus on rigorous scientific and theoretical foundations to create professionals with thorough understanding of the fundamentals and a capability of applying this knowledge for research, analysis and design.
