Campus Connexions

No one can do everything on his/her own, so the only way to work and achieve something is to cultivate a sense of oneness amongst your team members so that you can achieve the goals that you want to

CAMPUS CONNEXIONS, a follow up to the successful Campus Conversations initiative by CIO-Pakistan was launched this year. The first event of the season was held on Friday the 11th of February and saw the participation of students, academia and members of the industry. It was divided into three segments: the Mentor Train session, the Knockout Round and the Board of Fame.

In this regard, a mentoring session, between members of the industry in Pakistan and students, was held. The mentoring session aimed at allowing the students to sit with each of the mentors present. Small groups of students were therefore ‘mentored’ by each of the mentors in turns, who were rotated every ten minutes so that everyone got a chance to communicate with and learn from all the mentors.

The idea behind this procedure was to allow students as well as members of the industry to engage themselves in quick discussions whereby an exchange of ideas could take place between them. Over 30 students, faculty members and ‘mentors’ attended this part of the event. The mentors consisted of InfoTech Group CEO, Naseer Akhtar, CEO TMT Ventures Zahoor Motiwala, CIO of Engro Corp Imran Daudi, PSEB’s Kabir Farooqi and Folio 3’s Naveed Qazi. They, along with some more members from the industry also judged later segments of the event.

During the Mentor Train session, the mentors were each given a topic, and they mentored the students on the same topic. The mentors spoke about different topics. These included ‘the X factor’, that special quality in a person or their work which gives you an edge over comrades, especially when hunting for a job. They also spoke of striking the balance between ‘GPA and Internships’, saying in effect, how students should find a balance between scholastic accomplishments and practical work on the field so that they have both theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the field of their choice. Many students feel that going alone and doing everything on their own is the best way to doing things.

However, our mentors spoke about the importance of team work and Team Spirit as well as entrepreneurship. No one can do everything on their own, so the only way to work and achieve something is to cultivate a sense of oneness amongst your team members so that you can achieve the goals that you want to. Tips on how to ‘Survive the workplace’ were also imparted amongst students, and they were also advised on the best ways to design resumes.

The Knockout Round again featured members of the industry, faculty members from the participating institutes and students. It was further divided into three segments whereby industry members, faculty and students could participate in the Knockout. The session was moderated by Naveen Naqvi, and mentors from the previous session judged this session. All participants were allowed ten minutes to prove their points, after which the judges evaluated them. During this session, Naveen explained the topic, and participants volunteered to participate. Based on the judging, the winners from this session were Arifa Batool amongst the students’ group, Tehmina Lodhi from the faculty, Shoaib Nizami from the industry members.

During the Board of Fame session, students were given some time to chalk down their ideas about how to tweak an existing app or an existing business idea. These ‘ideas’ were later presented to the judges panel in the form of elevator pitches. The judges panel was made up of Zahoor Motiwala and the winners for this segment were Syed Ali Raza (FAST University), Tania Farasat (Iqra University), Arifa Batool (FAST University). They now have a month to carry out their ideas, at the end of which, based on how they have managed to execute the ideas, they will receive token sponsorship cash prizes, courtesy TMT Ventures.

Following an announcement of the winning ideas to the Board of Fame, the judges, the moderator and the invited guests from the industry and the academia were honored with acknowledgements and pledges. And so, Campus Connexions came to a wrap with Team CIO Pakistan all set to kickstart the next session of Campus Conversations South! Courtesy: ciopakistan.com
