UNIDO promoting sustainable energy & use from biomass




STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has recently organised a validation workshop here last week for the project titled "Promoting Sustainable Energy Production & Use from Biomass in Pakistan".

Aim of the workshop was to present the project document and feasibility studies done for the pilot projects to all the stakeholders.

The project has been initiated in collaboration with the Global Environment facility.

UNIDO has pioneered the initiative of promoting market-based adoption of modern biomass energy conversion technologies for process heat and power generation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and rural communities in the country through this project.

“The collaboration from AEDB, SMEDA and other government sector organizations, private sector are very important for the real-time deployment of renewable energy systems,” UNIDO Country Representative, Shadia Bakhait, said on the occasion.

Muhammad Ahmad, National Programme Coordinator Biomass Energy, highlighted on the strategy of UNIDO for climate change mitigation and role of UNIDO as a technical agency for the deployment of renewable energy projects.

Arif Alauddin, CEO AEDB, briefed the audience on the successful interventions of the Board for energy utilization from natural sources in Pakistan.

He hoped that the demonstration waste-to-energy applications would inspire the local entrepreneurs to invest in the waste-to-energy and biomass sectors.

Chief guest Abdul Ghaffar Soomro said that the project would address the needs of today's energy crisis by utilizing renewable energy for strengthening the industrial sector of Pakistan.
