‘Pakistan direly needs modern irrigation system’

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: The government is making all-out efforts to implement the much-needed modern irrigation system in the country to enhance agricultural productivity and save water in the face of depleting water resources.

“Water is a national issue and the government is committed to help farmers in the installation of modern irrigation systems for conserving water and enhancing output,” Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Mohammad Gondal said this while presiding over a project titled ‘Water Conservation and Productivity Enhancement through High Efficiency Irrigation System’ here last week. He said that delay in the implementation could only be compensated if we succeed to start the much-needed project next month in all provinces simultaneously,”

He said that all the provinces have been sensitised to the importance of the issue and they have fully agreed to start the project as quickly as possible.

The minister said that under the revised PC-1 the provinces have been empowered to identify the beneficiaries, companies and supervise and implement the project themselves.
The PARC, he added, would be given the task of registering the service provider companies and monitoring of the work done.
