Rs 2.5b allocated for 2500 new water courses in Punjab


STAFF REPORTER LAHORE: Some 2500 new water courses of 5-km long each will be constructed in Punjab besides sinking solar tubewells first time in the history of the country with Rs 2.5 billion cost.

“Eeach water course would comprise 1-km long brick lining and 4-km as proper earthened,” revealed Director General, Water Management, Agriculture Department Punjab Ch Ashraf, while talking to media.

He said that main objective of this project is to increase agri production by effective utilization of irrigation water through improvement of the canal commanded water courses.

He said this project was being implemented in the entire irrigated and barani/non-canal commanded areas of the country, including Punjab province.

He also said that the government was also promoting the drip irrigation system in the province and demonstration farms of 1000 acres of land would also be developed in five districts of Bhakkar, Layyah, Khushab, Mianwali and Muzaffargarh.

He said that the project would help encourage farmers participation to improve their capabilities for better management of water at farm level besides generating job opportunities in the rural areas by utilizing local resources.http://www.technologytimes.pk/mag/2011/feb11/issue02/rs25b_allocated_for_2500.php
