New methods can boost banana export

STAFF REPORT ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is among the largest banana producing country of the world and if the government takes appropriate measures its export can to Central Asian countries, Iran and Afghanistan can increase manifold.

With more than 349,000 hectares, Pakistan is among the leading banana producing countries of the world. Sindh is the largest banana producing region in Pakistan as 90 percent of the total banana is being produced in this province.

“With the adoption of new techniques Sindh can produce an extra 350,000 tons of bananas each year,” said an official.

He said that per acre banana yield is around 10 tons in Pakistan which is much lower than the global output, but it could be increased by providing incentives to the growers. Banana cultivation and exports are expected to increase after improvement in the marketing sector over the last four years, the official added.
